PLUMP this FRI At Brian Oneill's

Feel free to come check us out this Friday at Brian Oneills in Rice Village. We play from 10pm to 2 am, and typically play about 4 sets, so there will be plenty of music to go around. Brian O'neills is located at 4242 Morningside in Houston, TX.

Also, our buddies Drop Trio will be playing their cd release party this Saturday, October 23 at Last Concert cafe in Houston. Please go check out the show. Cool beans.

Last Fri in Dallas

We had a mighty fine time over at the Red Blood Club in Dallas last Friday. It had been about 2 years since we had been there last, and it certainly was nice to be back. Mike the owner is a real cool guy, and that place really does have a nice vibe to it. On the drive up there we listened to this one jazz cd that I don't know the name of (Jason's choice), Burgers by Hot Tuna (Al), Thunderchicken by Papa Mali (Doug) and New Danger by Mos Def (Andrew).

It was really nice to hang with our good buddies in Peach Truck Republic. They have taken about a year off the road just taking a break and then recording their album, and they are just starting to play out again. Wes, Justin, Jerry, and Evan are just about the nicest guys out there. We made sure to invite Wes and Justin to play some guitar and keys with us. Here is the setlist:

FRI OCT 15, RED BLOOD CLUB, DALLAS, TX (opening for Peach Truck Republic and The Four)
Last Mile, Oso Nova, Sweet Leaf*, Buddy Boo*, Dub>The Heights, Varmint Poontang>Freedom Jazz Dance
*with Wes Dismuke on guitar and Justin on Keys (both from Peach Truck Republic)

For me, the highlight of the show was playing those two jams with the Peach Truck boys. Also, we are stoked about the Varmint Poontang, and we have been seguing to FJD the last couple shows. That is fun as hell to play.

The most humourous incident of the evening was that Jason had brought this blazer in the car and was going to incorporate it into his stage look for the show. (I was insistent that he wear it). We show up at the Red Blood Club, and see the middle band--The Four. Their gimmick was that everybody in the band wears blazers, and they clearly beat young Jason Jackson to the punch. I thought it was pretty funny and started screaming at Jason that "I told you not to wear that blazer" Anyhoo, if you ever want some strong coffee and fresh cinnamon rolls--go to the Phillips 66 in Centerville. We were wired during the late night drive back, and pulled in at 5 am.

Dallas this Friday

PLUMP will be in Dallas this Friday evening, October 15 at the Red Blood Club. We are opening for our good buddies in Peach Truck Republic. PLUMP starts promptly at 10 pm. Please see the gigs page for more detail regarding location, maps, etc.

College Station last Saturday

Its always a very nice time at Revolution in Bryan, TX. We started heading that way around 7 pm. We listened to the new Free Radicals album (Jason's choice), which is definitely cool, and definitely long. We also listened to Don't Let Go by Jerry Garcia (Al's choice). Then we got in, set up, and check out Jim Owsley Quartet. This was our 3rd time playing with these guys, and they have gotten better every time. They totally rocked the house tonite. Here was our set:

SAT OCT 9, Revolution, Bryan, TX (Jim Owsley Quartet opened)
Set I: Memphis Soul Stew*, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Last Mile, Scarlet Begonias>Scarfunk>New Waverly*, Varmint Poontang>Freedom Jazz Dance

Set II: Day Tripper*, Dub*>The Heights*, Aslan, Can You Do Without, Electric Netwerk Machine (of Rage?), If I had the World, Sophisticated Frothy>What's the Buzz (Reprise)>Word Gets Around, Everybody Wanna get Rich (Right away), Last Concert, Buddy Boo
*with Jim Owsley on organ

This show was a rocker from start to finish. There was actually a bra thrown on stage which hooked onto Andrew's bass. Good shot!

Friday in Houston

It was a very nice evening with our buddies Mikado at Last Concert on Friday. We were worried a bit about the rain, but there was no problem there. We had a good crowd, Mikado played first and rocked--with a Spinal Tap opener of "Heavy Duty Rock-n-Roll". That rocked.
Here is our setlist:

FRI OCT 8, Last Concert Cafe, Houston, Tx
A-Minor Soundcheck jam, Scarlet Begonias>Scarfunk, Last Concert, Timequake, Word Gets Around, Bumbo klot, Electric Netwerk Machine (of Rage), Oso Nova, Varmint Poontang>Freedom Jazz Dance, Aslan, Sophisticated Frothy>Sweet Leaf>Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Buddy Boo, Memphis Soul Stew

In talking after the show, we thought we played the best verison of "Last Concert" ever. Also notable was the Sophisticated Frothy, which we had been practicing a lot as of late. Just as we loved the Tap cover by Mikado, they complimented us on Peter Tosh's "Bumbo Klot" which did in fact rock.

Let's watch Billy Cobham

First of all, I have decided to take some drum lessons. After playing for about 11 years, I decided the time was ripe to start over and learn about the drums and striking of the drums and the holding of the sticks and stuff. I am talking from the very beginning. I spent 5 minutes learning how to hold a stick. My teacher is this guy named Troy who appears to be very nice and a very good drummer. The really remarkable thing about Troy is that he is a friend of superstar drummer Billy Cobham of Miles Davis fame, of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, of Billy Cobham Band fame, of Billy Cobham/George Duke Band fame, of Jazz is Dead fame, etc. etc. etc. Anyhoo, Billy Cobham is coming to town on Thursday October 21 to do a drum clinic at H&H music on I-10 and the Beltway. He is also performing at HCC on 1-10 and Beltway on Saturday October 23. I am crossing my fingers hoping I get to meet him.

Back to the drum lesson, we spent about 10 minutes talking about the holding of the sticks, and about 20 minutes talking about Billy Cobham and all the times Troy has see him play--30 years back. Super cool.

Real-Live Spin Doctor Sighting

It appears that Andrew is now hanging out with the glitterati, as he has befriended Mark the bass player from the Spin Doctors. It seems that Mark has promised to spend some time working with Andrew on bass-riffery, which should be very interesting to say the least. We are hoping that Andrew gets asked to sing back-up on the reprise to "Pocket Full of Kryptonite".

Don't forget to come check us out on Friday night at Last Concert Cafe with Mikado. It will be mighty fine to say the least. And Saturday night at Revolution in Bryan will also be a killer.

Houston Press Ad

All right

PLUMP has two shows for ya this weekend. First, we will be playing with our good buddies in Mikado on FRI. This will be a very good show. Please check out last week's and this week's Houston Press, as we took the liberty of putting an ad in the paper about this show. Cool. Here are the specifics:

FRI OCT 8, LAST CONCERT CAFE, 1403 NANCE, HOUSTON, TX 10 PM (WITH MIKADO)

In addition, we will be hitting Bryan, TX this weekend as well.

SAT OCT 9, REVOLUTION, 211 S. MAIN, BRYAN, TX 10 PM (WITH JIM OWSLEY QUARTET)

We are ready to rock in Bryan. Please bring your dancing shoes. Jim Owsley Quartet will be playing as well, and they are always really good players and very nice guys.

The key here is, I like playing music outside and drinking beer outside, and weather permitting, I will get to do both this weekend for two night. Feel free to come have a beer with me--especially before my speech becomes incoherent and I start ranting about mumblety-peg and such and such.
